Description The AHA PALS Course has been updated to reflect new science in the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC. This classroom, Instructor-led course uses a series of videos and simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics.   The goal of the PALS course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes. The PALS course uses a series of videos and simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics.

Who Should Take This Course?  The AHA PALS course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive and critical care units, and others who require PALS certification for job requirements.

Course Content

• Administration of high-quality child and infant CPR and AED
• Recognition of cardiopulmonary arrest and response
• Recognition of differences between respiratory distress and failure
• Administration of early interventions for respiratory distress and failure
• Recognition of differences between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock
• Administration of early interventions for the treatment of shock
• Recognition of differences between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias
• Clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias
• Post–cardiac arrest management

Course Format and Exam Before taking the PALS course, students must pass the online PALS Precourse Self-Assessment with a score of 70% or higher. This test is part of the PALS student Website (access granted with purchase of the PALS Provider Manual). For the classroom portion, students will actively participate in, practice and complete all learning stations, complete the open-resource written exam with a minimum score of 84%, pass the 1- and 2-Rescuer Child BLS With AED and 1- and 2-Rescuer Infant BLS Skills Tests and pass 2 PALS core case scenarios (1 cardiac and 1 respiratory or shock) as a team leader, providing appropriate medical treatment and demonstrating effective team dynamics

Continuing Education Credits  EMS Professionals requiring continuing education credits, must submit a written request within 60 days of course completion. Course Completion Card Students receive the American Heart Association PALS Provider eCard, valid for two years.  AHA cards will be processed as eCards, and usually received within 3-5 business days following the class.  Students can expect to receive an email from ecards@heart.org or noreply@heart.org, with a link to claim their eCard. BLS Renewal  If you are taking an PALS class, PALS Update or an PALS skills session, you are also eligible to take a BLS skills session, on the same day, at a discounted rate of $30. You must first complete BLS Heartcode in order to take advantage of the discounted BLS skills session.
